Abstract

In Ndoki (Abia State, Southeast Nigeria), indigenous women manually weave Akwete, a highly reputed Igbo textile produced on women’s broad vertical looms. The weavers decorate these fabrics with symbolic motifs that convey cultural narratives, historic events, proverbs, and societal perceptions. Recently, cheap, machine-made pirated imitations have proliferated across physical and online markets. While this piracy threatens traditional livelihoods, it has simultaneously increased mass awareness of Akwete aesthetics. This qualitative study presents a comparative analysis of authentic hand-woven Akwete and its machinemade counterfeits, evaluating their distinct physical characteristics and socio-economic impacts. Utilizing field observations and focus group discussions, the research examines differences in craftsmanship, value perception, and consumer demand. The findings reveal that while fashion designers increasingly adopt
cheaper counterfeits, this market shift severely undermines the cultural heritage and economic survival of indigenous weavers. Conclusively, this article supports the need for protective intellectual property measures and sustainable cultural preservation policies to support authentic Akwete weaving communities.
